A long, remote day in the quiet upper reaches of Eskdale over Esk Pike and the noble Bowfell, passing the famous Great Slab and finishing at the beautiful Three Tarns before the valley walk home.

The quiet upper reaches of Eskdale provide the start and finish for this long, remote walk. A gentle riverside approach leads us past Cam Spout Crag and onwards to Esk Hause, where we begin the climb through the impressive bands of sandstone and volcanic rock that form Esk Pike. From the summit, we descend to Ore Gap — once a site of haematite mining in the 1700s — before making the ascent of Bowfell, passing the famous Great Slab along the way, whose rocky summit is well worth exploring.A descent over shattered rocks brings us down to Three Tarns, a beautiful and peaceful spot that's perfect for a brew before the long walk back down Upper Eskdale. The day ends as it began, in the quiet beauty of the valley — with well-earned refreshments waiting at the Woolpack Inn!
"Bowfell is a mountain that commands attention whenever it appears in the view. As much as any other mountain, the noble Bowfell may be regarded as affording an entirely typical Lakeland climb, with easy walking over grass giving place to rough scrambling on scree, and summit deserving of detailed exploration and rewarding visitors with beautiful views." — AW

Mountain Leader

Having lived in Cumbria for more than two decades, I've come to know the Western Lake District in all its moods — from the hidden corners and winding fell paths to the quirks of its ever-changing weather. I'm endlessly eager to explore these landscapes, but always with a healthy respect for the conditions they present.

With a background in Geology and Geography and a deep love for the outdoors, I enjoy bringing the fells to life for others — interpreting the rocks beneath your feet, the landforms that shape our views, and the flora that thrives in this rugged environment. With me, a day in the hills is not just a walk but an experience: informative, rewarding and full of interest.

My professional life has been shaped by more than 20 years as a Geography teacher and over two decades leading the Duke of Edinburgh's Award at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels. I've organised and led hundreds of fieldtrips — from local adventures in the Lakes to UK-wide excursions and international trips, including ski trips and a self-planned expedition to Kenya. These years of guiding, teaching and adventuring have shaped my approach: safe, knowledgeable, enthusiastic and always committed to giving people the confidence to enjoy the mountains at their own pace.
