Two mighty giants of Wasdale — and poor Green Gable forever in their shadow! A challenging and immensely rewarding day with a hands-on rock scramble to the summit of Great Gable.

Two mighty giants of Wasdale — and poor Green Gable forever living in the shadow of its better-known neighbours! This challenging and immensely rewarding walk sets off from Wasdale Head, climbing steadily towards Black Sail Pass before the steep and exposed ascent of Kirk Fell. From its summit, the views west along Wasdale are amazing.A descent to the lonely col of Beck Head follows, before we tackle the steep, rocky climb onto Great Gable. Along the way, you'll learn about route choice and gain confidence using your hands on an easy rock scramble to reach the summit. From the top, a steep, rocky descent leads us to Windy Gap, where a short grassy pull brings us onto Green Gable — understated, but beautifully positioned. We then retrace our steps to the col and enjoy the long, scenic walk out via Sty Head. This is a day that delivers a real sense of achievement, best rounded off with well-earned refreshments at the historic Wasdale Head Inn.
"The truth is, Great Gable casts a spell. It starts as an honourable adversary and becomes a friend." — AW

Is this walk for me?

A tough day out in terms of both height gain, and there is steep exposed ground up Kirk Fell and a short hands-on rock scramble up to the summit of Great Gable. Mountain walking experience would be beneficial. If you like the sound of this walk but cannot make the date, please get in touch — I can organise a bespoke day for you.

Mountain Leader

Having lived in Cumbria for more than two decades, I've come to know the Western Lake District in all its moods — from the hidden corners and winding fell paths to the quirks of its ever-changing weather. I'm endlessly eager to explore these landscapes, but always with a healthy respect for the conditions they present.

With a background in Geology and Geography and a deep love for the outdoors, I enjoy bringing the fells to life for others — interpreting the rocks beneath your feet, the landforms that shape our views, and the flora that thrives in this rugged environment. With me, a day in the hills is not just a walk but an experience: informative, rewarding and full of interest.

My professional life has been shaped by more than 20 years as a Geography teacher and over two decades leading the Duke of Edinburgh's Award at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels. I've organised and led hundreds of fieldtrips — from local adventures in the Lakes to UK-wide excursions and international trips, including ski trips and a self-planned expedition to Kenya. These years of guiding, teaching and adventuring have shaped my approach: safe, knowledgeable, enthusiastic and always committed to giving people the confidence to enjoy the mountains at their own pace.
