Have you always relied on someone else to navigate, or found maps confusing? This introductory navigation course will change that. In a relaxed, supportive environment, you'll learn the fundamental skills that will give you the confidence to plan and follow a route independently. This course covers:
  • Understanding OS maps — symbols, scale, contours and grid references
  • Setting the map and orienting yourself in the landscape
  • Introduction to the compass — parts, how to take a bearing
  • Walking on a bearing in straightforward terrain
  • Identifying features around you and matching them to the map
  • Simple route planning
Navigation is a skill that builds slowly — and with it comes a wonderful sense of independence and freedom in the hills. There's also a mindfulness element: slowing down, reading the landscape, noticing small details. It's a different way of being in the mountains.
