Perhaps you have wild camped before and not had the best experience? Or are you an experienced campsite camper who wants to break out into the freedom of the mountains? Enjoy a 6–8km walk with me in the rugged beauty of the Western fells, followed by a wild camp and a hike out in the morning. This course includes a virtual meeting or phone call beforehand to discuss equipment, packing and your expectations, and covers:
- Understanding UK wild camping etiquette
- How to read the weather forecast
- What to pack and what to leave behind
- Route choice and navigation
- Selecting a decent spot to pitch a tent in more rugged terrain
- Efficient pitching in the wind
- Toilets — what is ok and what is not!
- Applying Leave No Trace principles
If you don't have all the wild camping kit you might need, please ask — I have some kit you can borrow (there is a charge for this).
"Keep close to Nature's heart… and break clear away, once in a while, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean." — John Muir
Solitude is a major draw. Nobody will trip over your guy lines here! Watching the sunset over the Irish Sea in the evening and waking up to mist rolling through Wasdale or Eskdale is a privilege. These moments root us and connect us to nature like nothing else.
